The Soul Ladies opened their friendlies season with a 38-30 win over the Hammersmith Senior Women’s team. M.B.S. used a tenacious defence and Mirriam Amony led a potent attack with a team-high 13 points.
The starting line-up of Janani Bodhinayake, Lauren Ferrell, Manon Grellet, Lucy Martinez Sabri and Rouguy Toure dug deep after going down early to a Hammersmith 3-pointer.
Coach Huggy and assistant-coach Louis Genus-Rhoden used their bench well, bringing on players like Carla Ponzani and Amony to keep the guard zone defence at full tempo.
Soul then stamped their defensive mark on the game with Michelle Teo drawing two offensive fouls and Lucelia Fortes making key defensive stops. The Soul Ladies took a three point lead going into the end of the first quarter.
However, Soul went into half-time down three points, after a scoring streak from Inga Rence from Hammersmith, who had a game-high 18-points and Soul had a disallowed three pointer from miles downtown from Rebecca Cox just milliseconds after the halftime whistle.

A 13-2 spree and a stifling defence in the 3rd quarter gave Soul an eight point lead going into the tight fourth quarter, where Hammersmith staged a fierce comeback. However, the gritty determination of Dominika Kurowskia and Cox, and two clutch three-pointers from Amony sealed the team win for the Soul Ladies.
The Soul defence was the key to the win who limited Hammersmith to two points in a pivotal third quarter. Shea Sergeant dominated on the boards with a team high nine rebounds. Additionally, Soul’s on-ball pressure caused problems for the opposing ball-handlers, with Lucy Martinez Sabri garnering four steals.
